In a significant move towards environmental responsibility, the Events Industry Council (EIC) and the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing sustainability practices within the global events sector. This collaboration seeks to standardize measurement tools, bolster advocacy efforts, and advance economic research to support the industry's transition to net-zero emissions.

Central to this initiative is the promotion of the Green Events Tool (GET), a web-based platform developed in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Managed by the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), GET enables event organizers to assess and report the environmental impact of their events, focusing on key areas such as energy consumption, transportation, and waste management.

The partnership also aims to integrate the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) initiative's measurement methodology into GET, aligning the tool with the specific needs of the events industry. Launched at COP26 in Glasgow, the NZCE initiative has garnered support from over 700 stakeholders across 60 countries, all committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

EIC President and CEO Amy Calvert emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "Given our industry’s scope and scale, our collective commitment to sustainable practices will leave a lasting impact on our participants, host communities, and the planet."
