Google Introduces Changes to Android Platform in India Following CCI Directive

In response to directives from the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Google has announced significant modifications to its Android platform within the country. These changes aim to provide users with enhanced control over their devices and promote fair competition among service providers.​

A pivotal update allows users to select their default search engine on Android smartphones, moving away from Google's previous practice of setting its search engine as the default. This initiative empowers consumers to choose their preferred search services, fostering a more personalized user experience.​

Additionally, Google is revising its approach to pre-installed applications. Device manufacturers will now have the flexibility to license individual Google apps for pre-installation, rather than being compelled to include a suite of Google services. This change is anticipated to encourage diversity in app offerings and provide manufacturers with greater autonomy in curating device software.​

These developments follow the CCI's imposition of a ₹1,337.76 crore fine on Google for abusing its dominant position in the Android ecosystem. By implementing these adjustments, Google demonstrates its commitment to adhering to regulatory requirements and promoting a competitive digital environment in India.​
