At the recent Vivatech fair in Paris, innovative startups showcased new AI- and sensor-driven solutions aimed at protecting our oceans. Presenting alongside the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, these ventures are striving to balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
Canadian Whale Seeker, led by biologist Emily Charry Tissier, revealed an AI-powered sensor platform that tracks whales in real time—a crucial tool for monitoring marine life amid numerous ecological threats. Meanwhile, oceanographer Alexandre Stegner demonstrated a neural network model from his firm Amphitrite capable of forecasting ocean currents up to 10 days ahead. This system allows ships to leverage currents for a fuel gain of up to four knots, reducing both costs and carbon emissions.
Another notable highlight was OceanEyes, a Japanese startup using satellite data and AI to predict sea conditions. By helping fishing vessels reduce fuel use and comply with sustainability regulations, the platform aims to diminish both emissions and overfishing.
While technology offers immense potential, experts at Vivatech emphasized that innovation must serve conservation—not exploitation. As Tara Ocean Foundation's André Abreu warned, using these tools to enhance catch could backfire on marine ecosystems.
